Many organisations, especially in the manufacturing sector, have realised the benefits of implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS). These EMS are often certified in accordance with ISO14001.

Increasingly, however, proactive organisations are starting to appreciate the holistic and integrated nature of their sustainability approach and management systems. Such thinking leads to the development of Sustainability Management Systems (SMS).
