FAQs

What is the FMCG Sustainability Institute (FSI)?
The FSI is an organisation formed to advance Sustainability in the FMCG and Retail industry via research, education, strategy and on-the-ground help.

Is the FMCG Sustainability Institute for profit?

Yes. The majority of the Institute’s research, education and consultancy services are provided on a commercial basis. The Institute also has a major annual research project, the FMCG Sustainability Barometer survey, which will be delivered free to industry and the public in March 2009 to contribute to the advancement of further thinking regarding Sustainability in FMCG. The FSI funds this research project, and the broader administration of the FSI, at its own expense. It is not government funded.

Who is behind the FMCG Sustainability Institute?

The FSI is a joint venture of two companies: Shopportunity (FMCG) and EcoSTEPS (Sustainability). Each is a thought leader in its respective industry, with a wide range of clients, regular industry presentations and published articles.

What does the FMCG Sustainability Institute do?
The primary activities of the FSI are research projects, educational programs, strategy and implementation services. Service areas cover both industry-wide initiatives and company-specific projects.

Don’t Fast Moving Consumer Goods and Sustainability exclude each other?
Not necessarily. There are many schools of thought on Sustainability. It is our belief that the vast majority of people in developed nations will continue to consume products and that the practicality and likelihood of all people returning to a bio-regional lifestyle of self-producing their own food, clothing, and shelter needs is slim. To that end, we aim to work with FMCG and Retail companies to deliver increased value for both their businesses and consumers. Economy is one of the three pillars of true Sustainability (along with environment and society).
